“Memento Mori”, 2019,
Wood fired stoneware with porcelain skull.
Completed during a residency at Guldagergaard ceramic research center
Whole scene: 8” long x 4” wide x 5” tall
About the process:
This piece is one of three larger sculptures I created during a 3.5 week residency at the Guldagergaard International Center for Ceramic Research. In addition to sculpting a few beasts and casting many tiny beasts, I led a 70 hour firing of their tiny anagama kiln. It was my first time leading a firing, and we were all extremely pleased with the results, especially given the short time window of my residency.
This beast is from a very dark stoneware, while the spikes and skull are from a pale porcelain. All the colors come the clay, the ash, and the flame, with no added glaze or slip.
About the piece:
A young Finnish woman saw the skull on the table by the kiln, and was disappointed when I said it wasn't for sale. However, once she saw two parts of the sculpture together, she sighed and nodded. She suggested "Memento Mori", a term neither Finnish or English, but perfect for a title.
Your beast will be sent out via USPS Priority Mail on December 16th or 17th, safely and securely heading your way. In case of overpayment for international shipping or multiple purchases, I'll refund the extra. Shipments to within the continental United States should arrive before December 25th.
If you would like gift wrapping or would like for the receipt to not include the price, let me know before the 16th and I can make it happen.
Interested in paying in Installments? Shoot me an email, and we can make it happen. However, I can't reserve a piece during a shop launch! If your favorite piece is still available 2 hours after the launch, then we can set something up.
