“Feathers”, 2018
Wood fired porcelain and stoneware
7” wide x 3”deep x 4.5” tall

About the process:
This original handmade sculpture was woodfired in a traditional Japanese-style anagama kiln. The kiln was fed with wood every five to ten minutes until it reached temperatures of 2300 Fahrenheit over the course of five days. The ash coated the piece and melted into an beautiful glaze. The teeth are made of a purer porcelain, which kept them pale. The two beasts sit on steel plate with a cork base, and are both removable. There's a little bit of epoxy reinforcement on the feet of the big dude, to create little sockets that match posts on the base.

About the piece:
Nowadays, everyone seems to know that dinosaurs had feathers. What is less known is apparently some cared for their young. It would be remarkable to witness those maternal interactions.
