“Flame-Horned Deer”, 2018
Wood fired porcelain and stoneware
5" long x 3" wide x 5" tall
About the process:
This original handmade sculpture was woodfired in a traditional Japanese-style anagama kiln. The kiln was fed with wood every five to ten minutes until it reached temperatures of 2200 Fahrenheit over the course of five days. The wood ash settled onto the piece, melting into a beautiful glaze. The horns are made of a darker stoneware. All the colors come the clay, the ash, and the flame. This beast was close to the front of the kiln, and collected rivulates of runny green ash, pooling on its belly.
Due to the dynamic nature of this beast's pose, I recommend displaying it with a bit of "quake putty" or "museum putty" for extra security. I'll include some with the beast
About the piece:
Deer are a warry type of beast, and the legendary Flame Horned Deer is no exception. Pictures of this beast can be found in ancient carvings from Japan in the East to the Indian Subcontinent in the West. It's theorized Flame Horned Deer roamed ancient Asia, before slipping back into the obscure mountain passes as human civilization grew and matured. (None of this is true.)
