“The Derp”, 2018
Wood fired porcelain
5.5” wide x 2”deep x 5.5” tall
About the process:
This original handmade sculpture was woodfired in a traditional Japanese-style anagama kiln. The kiln was fed with wood every five to ten minutes until it reached temperatures of 2300 Fahrenheit over the course of five days. The ash coated the piece and melted into an beautiful glaze. This beast was fired upside down, with the wadding the piece rested on leaving cute dark spots on its back. The wings are made of a purer porcelain, which stayed pale. All the colors come the clay, the ash, and the flame.
About the piece:
"The Derp" is a legendary creature, one famous for roaming behind the books of bookshelves everywhere and occasionally sleeping in stored suitcases in the basement. Rumor has it that The Derp primarily eats dust bunnies, but no one know for sure.
