"To Bell a Beast", 2020
Wood fired porcelaneous stoneware and porcelain, red thread
8" long x 2.5" wide x 3" tall

About the process:
This original handmade sculpture was woodfired in a traditional Japanese-style anagama kiln. The kiln was fed with wood every five to ten minutes until it reached temperatures of 2300 Fahrenheit over the course of 100 hours. As the firing goes on, the wood ash settles on the pieces and melts into a ceramic glaze. I made the teeth out of a purer porcelain that resists the ash, and made the bell out of an inbetween clay. All the colors come the clay, the ash, and the flame, with no added glaze or slip.
This piece captures so many delightful effects in one piece. The back is bare from ash, and there's unexpected brown flashing between the bare clay and the ash. Clusters of crystals create snowflake patterns on its nose.

About the piece:
And so, the dust bunnies decided - the best way they could protect themselves from the ravages of the beast was to simply tie a bell around its neck. They were all in agreement. There was just one bit they hadn't considered yet. Who would bell the beast?
